Aston Villa are reportedly weighing up a January move for Sevilla midfielder Rubén Vargas after his sparkling start to the season caught the eye of Monchi and Unai Emery.

Rubén Vargas’ rise at Sevilla

The Swiss international only joined Sevilla in January but quickly made an impression with two goals and an assist in the second half of last season.

He has carried that form into the new campaign, registering three assists in his opening three La Liga matches and establishing himself as a key figure in the Andalusian side’s attack.

Monchi and Emery keen on a reunion

Villa’s sporting director Monchi, who spent two separate spells building his reputation at Sevilla, has turned once again to his former club in search of reinforcements.

He previously targeted Loïc Badé, who ultimately joined Bayer Leverkusen, but now sees Vargas as a player well suited to life in the Premier League.

Both Monchi and Emery are said to admire the 27-year-old’s pace, dribbling ability and knack for scoring crucial goals.

Deal could be within reach

According to reports in Spain, Sevilla may be willing to part ways with Vargas if Villa meet their €20m valuation in January.

While the player is contracted until 2028, the fee is seen as a fair compromise given his relatively short stay in Seville.

If Villa press ahead, Vargas could become the latest addition to Emery’s squad as the club continue to blend Champions League ambition with squad depth, ensuring they remain competitive on all fronts this season.
