Barcelona sporting director Deco has poured cold water on growing speculation that the club will pursue a new striker in the near future.
Despite ongoing rumours linking the Blaugrana with several attacking names, the former midfielder has made it clear that the club’s focus lies elsewhere — in balance, patience, and the continued development of existing talent.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Deco explained that the idea of signing a traditional number nine is not a pressing concern for Barcelona.
“There’s no need to be obsessed with signing a new striker. Maybe it’s possible to play without a traditional striker. Ferran can play as a number 9… PSG won the Champions League without a main striker,” he said.
His remarks come at a time when questions about Robert Lewandowski’s long-term future are becoming more frequent.
The Polish forward, now 37, has a contract that runs until 2026, but Barcelona are already thinking ahead about how to evolve their attack in the coming years.
A measured approach to rebuilding
Deco’s message suggests that the club is favouring evolution over revolution. He reportedly believes Hansi Flick’s squad already has the flexibility to cope without a major attacking signing.
Ferran Torres has shown flashes of promise in a central role, while youngsters such as Pedri, Gavi, and Fermin Lopez continue to impress and provide attacking dynamism from deeper positions.
The approach reflects a wider philosophy under Deco — less reliance on the transfer market and greater emphasis on internal growth.
“We’re not going to talk about renewals in October,” he told Catalunya Radio. “We’re taking it step by step. Lewandowski has been one of the best strikers of recent years, but now it’s time to focus on getting injured players back.”
That sense of composure may frustrate fans eager for marquee signings, but it aligns with Barcelona’s broader aim of building sustainably after years of financial strain and transitional management.
Future plans and quiet ambition
Still, speculation around future transfers refuses to fade. Reports in Spain claim that Barcelona have outlined three major priorities for 2026 — a left-footed centre-back, a full-back, and eventually, a striker to succeed Lewandowski.
Among the names mentioned are Julian Alvarez, Serhou Guirassy, and even Erling Haaland, though the latter appears more dream than reality.

For now, Barcelona seem content to stay patient. Deco’s vision is clear: avoid panic spending, trust the current squad, and rebuild the club’s strength one calculated move at a time.
As for the next No. 9 at Camp Nou, fans may need to wait a little longer — but if Deco’s calm confidence is anything to go by, Barcelona’s next great striker could already be waiting in the wings.
