Tottenham Hotspur pulled off one of the standout moves of the summer transfer window by signing Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
The highly-rated 22-year-old was strongly linked with Chelsea for several weeks, but Spurs ultimately won the race for his signature.
Chelsea had identified Simons as a potential solution to their creative struggles, but negotiations never advanced far enough.
Instead, Ange Postecoglou’s side swooped in to secure a player widely regarded as one of the brightest young attacking talents in Europe.
Agent explains why Chelsea move collapsed
Speaking about the failed Stamford Bridge transfer, Simons’ agent Ali Barat shed light on the situation:
“Tottenham and Chelsea are both fantastic clubs with solid projects, and there was real interest from both sides. But Chelsea was always clear with us; they had certain constraints that made it difficult to move forward with discussions. So when the talks with Tottenham started, it became clear that this would be a project that would be a perfect fit for Xavi.”
For Spurs, the deal could not have come at a better time. They were in need of a player capable of unlocking defences, and Simons fits the profile perfectly.
He is comfortable across multiple attacking roles, boasting the ability to create chances as well as finish them. His arrival adds a fresh dimension to Tottenham’s forward line.
Chelsea, meanwhile, may come to regret missing out. With their ongoing issues in the final third, the Dutchman’s flair and technical brilliance could have been exactly what Enzo Maresca’s squad required.

At just 22, Simons is still developing, but his ceiling is sky-high. Tottenham will hope to nurture his talent and turn him into a world-class star in the coming years.
