Juan Mata has shared an emotional farewell message with Western Sydney Wanderers fans after bringing his one-year spell at the club to an end.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder confirmed that he will continue his A-League journey after completing a move to Melbourne Victory.
Mata’s career down under
The 37-year-old joined Wanderers last year following stints with Galatasaray in Turkey and Vissel Kobe in Japan.
In his debut A-League season, he featured 23 times and scored once, adding valuable experience and leadership to the squad.
While his time in Sydney proved short-lived, Mata’s arrival was seen as a major statement for the A-League and helped raise the profile of the competition.
A message from the heart
In a statement shared with supporters, Mata expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received during his time in Sydney.
“Thank you very much to all the Wanderers family: everyone who is part of the club, fans, RBB… You are such a special club and will never forget how you welcomed me and your support through the season. Your vision in using the power of football to positively impact society sets you apart and you will always have a friend in me. All the best for the future, thank you for this wonderful experience in Sydney and for having opened the A-League’s door to me. I’m really proud to have worn your shirt.”
A new chapter for Juan Mata in Melbourne
Mata will now link up with Melbourne Victory, extending his career at the highest level of Australian football.
The Spanish playmaker brings with him a wealth of experience from European football, having lifted the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Europa League with Manchester United, as well as enjoying earlier success with Chelsea.
Victory fans will be hoping his creativity and vision can inspire their side to challenge for honours in the upcoming campaign, as Mata embarks on what could be the final chapter of an illustrious career.
