According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Arsenal are reportedly leading the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Dutch international has been a pivotal figure at the Camp Nou for six years, but uncertainty looms over his future with his contract due to expire next summer.
Barcelona are reluctant to risk losing him for free, meaning a sale in winter could be on the cards if fresh contract talks stall.
Frenkie de Jong Contract uncertainty opens the door
The rise of young talents Marc Bernal and Marc Casado has given Barcelona more flexibility in midfield, potentially making De Jong expendable.
While Arsenal are viewed as the frontrunners for his signature, Saudi Pro League clubs are also circling, ready to offer lucrative deals to the 27-year-old.
A questionable fit at the Emirates
Despite the links, a move to north London appears unlikely. Arsenal splashed over £260 million in the summer, notably strengthening their midfield with Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.
Alongside Declan Rice and Mikel Merino, the Gunners already have a wealth of options in the holding and deep-lying roles.
De Jong’s qualities as a ball distributor and tempo-setter are undeniable, but the Gunners are well-stocked in his preferred role. Adding him would be a luxury rather than a necessity.
The wage stumbling block
Even if Mikel Arteta’s side were tempted, finances pose a major obstacle. De Jong currently earns around £315,000 per week at Barcelona, a figure that dwarfs Arsenal’s current wage structure.
No player at the Emirates is on a similar salary, making it hard to justify such an outlay for a player turning 29 before the season ends.
More leverage than likelihood
Given these factors, the rumours may be more about pressure than probability. De Jong’s representatives could be floating Arsenal’s name to push Barcelona into accelerating contract talks.
Rather than a Premier League switch in January, a contract renewal at the Camp Nou feels like the most realistic outcome.
