André Onana Transfer News

André Onana has sealed a season-long loan move from Manchester United to Turkish side Trabzonspor, bringing a dramatic twist to his difficult spell at Old Trafford.

André Onana turbulent time at United

Signed from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for €51 million plus add-ons, the Cameroonian was seen as the long-term replacement for David de Gea

. But despite flashes of quality, his time in Manchester has been overshadowed by high-profile errors and inconsistency.

Onana did end his debut season with an FA Cup winners’ medal, yet pressure mounted after further mistakes last term under Ruben Amorim.

A hamstring injury disrupted his preparations for the new campaign, and his first outing of 2025–26 went badly wrong as United crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Grimsby following his costly error.

Lammens signing signals change

His prospects were further hit when United swooped on deadline day for Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens in a deal worth €21 million plus add-ons.

The Belgian’s arrival was widely viewed as a sign that Onana had fallen down Amorim’s pecking order.

With the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday, Trabzonspor moved quickly to finalise the deal, offering the 29-year-old a fresh start in the Süper Lig.

Club confirmation

A short Manchester United statement read:
“Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025-26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish André good luck.”

What next for United

Onana’s departure leaves United with new signing Lammens and experienced backup options for the rest of the season, while Amorim prepares his squad for a crucial clash away to Manchester City in the Premier League following the international break.
