Arsenal, Manchester United, and Aston Villa are all reportedly lining up moves for Sporting CP’s highly-rated centre-back Zeno Debast, with the Belgian international shaping up to be one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe.
Zeno Debast rapid rise in Portugal
At just 21 years old, Debast has developed into a cornerstone of Sporting’s backline. The Halle-born defender honed his craft at Anderlecht’s academy before making the bold move to Portugal last summer.
Since then, he has clocked up over 50 appearances for Sporting, contributing two goals and four assists in the process.
What sets him apart is not just his composure in possession but also his ability to read the game well beyond his years.
A natural centre-back, Debast has shown the flexibility to slot into a holding midfield role, which has only heightened his value.
Unsurprisingly, his contract includes a hefty €80 million release clause.
A transfer tug-of-war
Manchester United are desperate to strengthen their defensive options, with doubts lingering over the long-term futures of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and even Raphael Varane. Debast is seen as a potential cornerstone for their rebuild.
Arsenal’s interest, however, raises eyebrows. Mikel Arteta already has William Saliba, Gabriel, Jakub Kiwior, and Ben White who can operate centrally.
Yet the Gunners’ recruitment strategy under Arteta has often favoured stockpiling versatile defenders, and Debast’s ability to double up as a midfielder could explain their pursuit.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, have become increasingly ambitious under Unai Emery, and adding a player of Debast’s pedigree would underline their determination to mix it with the Premier League’s elite.
A man in demand
With three top Premier League clubs now circling, Sporting face a major battle to hold on to Debast beyond next summer.
His price tag may prove daunting, but for clubs looking to lock down a generational talent in defence, the investment could well be worth it.
